Predator Free 2050

Predator Free 2050
85 million years ago NZ was one of the first countries to split apart from Gondwanaland. Gondwanaland is when all the land in the whole Earth was together in one big country - they split up and became the continents. This meant that the only mammals NZ has, either swan here or flew here.

Because NZ is an island with no mammals, the birds, insects etc became defenseless (because they had no predators to hide from). Maori and Europeans settlers killed lots of animals, and brought with them predators from other countries (for example possums, rats, stoats, dogs).

Those predators brought here by settlers, have destroyed our native birds/plants. NZ has one of the worst extinction records of any nation in the world.

NZ has been trying to control the pests by using traps, poisoning but it hasn’t really worked. We need to work together to control the pests.

It is everyone’s responsibility to control pests and protect native species - all New Zealanders.

WALT use my own words to explain a scientific concept

You have just watched a clip that explains how earthquakes happen.
In the table below, put a screenshot from the video and explain IN YOUR OWN WORDS what is happening in the picture.
The first one is done for you as an example.

Screen Shot 2016-12-05 at 8.19.34 AM.png
This is a globe. It is a model of what the Earth looks like. On this model, you can’t see the tectonic plates, but they are there, underneath all the land and ocean.
Screenshot 2016-12-09 at 10.18.54.png
This is a globe. It is our home, it is a model of the planet earth and it shows us what we see, we see oceans it shows us that the earth spins but the only thing it doesn’t show us is the inside of the earth but through science we have discovered that the earth is not hollow.

WALT think from another persons point of view

After reading about what Rata Street School recommends to help students/people who have experienced an earthquake, what would you recommend for people in our school? Think of five things you suggest for Tamaki Primary School.

  1. Always be ready to save yourself in a earthquake
  2. To run outside the house or school run to a safe place
  3.  Hold onto it until the shaking stops
  4. Take cover under something strong, like a sturdy desk or a table
  5. Drop to the ground {Avoid Falling}

You can add an image if you want to.

Rumble
Something is under rocks
Crumble
Break
Evacuation
The action of evacuating a person or a place
Invisible Enemy
They can’t see their enemy because their enemy is invisible.
Hopeless
Have no hope
Find a phrase that you didn’t know, or helped create a picture in your head. Find out what it means.
An example has been done for you.
You can add an image if you want to.
as if the ground had turned to liquid.
This helped me create a picture in my head of the ground turning from solid to liquid. In my head I couldn’t stand up anymore, I was falling over and all the stuff around me fell to the ground as well. Everything was moving.

WALT: find the main idea in a story

This story talks about the Earthquake that hit the South Island of New Zealand recently.
Find three key ideas in the story, then write 50 words to summarise.

Three key ideas in this story are
  • Strong 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch on Sunday
  • The earthquake caused cliffs to collapse into the sea but no major damage to the city was reported."
  • The epicentre was 15 kms (9 miles) east of Christchurch and at a shallow depth of 15 km (9 miles), said the country’s seismological body Geonet.
Summary of the story (put it into your own words) - 50 words
Start here:A strong 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch on Sunday.
The earthquake caused cliffs to collapse into the sea but no major damage to the city was reported.
The epicentre was 15 kms (9 miles) east of Christchurch and at a shallow depth of 15 km (9 miles), said the country’s seismological body Geonet.
Geonet said there were more than 40 aftershocks.
The quake came eight days before the anniversary of the deadly 2011 quake that caused upwards of NZ$40 billion of damage and took the lives of almost 200 people.

WALT draw a picture to describe a sound

WALT: write a poem about an earthquake

Write a poem about earthquakes.
Maybe an acrostic poem, or any other type of poem you want.

Try to use powerful words from the video, like these
  • Desperate
  • Disorganised
  • Dig frantically in hope
  • A community overwhelmed
  • A mound of rubble
  • Catastrophe

Start here: Earth rumbles, and buildings crumble with people inside, rescuers rush to save people , terror rips through people's heart, horrifying sights are all around us,quivering people clutch each other, utter destruction of historic buildings, knowing people that have no homes, earth shakes in all directions, sounds of sirens fill the air.

WALT: Use powerful words to describe a setting

WALT describe the feelings of people

Watch the clip again and carefully watch what the people are doing.
  • Why do some run away?
  • Why do some stand still?
  • When the bridge collapses, what do the people do?
  • Why do they try to get into the van?

Use these questions to help you think about the way people might have been feeling during this earthquake.
Write 30 words about how they might be feeling.

Start here:Some people run away so they could protect themselves, some people stand still because they watch their houses break down, when the bridge collapses the people run for their life, they try to get into a van because they want to drive somewhere safe.
