One reason why Fish and Chips were popular on Friday is the night when people all around the world had to eat fish but Catholics had to eat red meat on Fridays as a penance (meaning like a punishment) to mark the day of Christ’s death.

New Zealanders eat seven million serves of chips a week!

Fast food takeaways such as mcdonalds, KFC and etc had not arrived in New Zealand yet from overseas.
